18V DC Motor

What component should I use to adjust the speed of a 18V DC electric motor? With a regular potentiometer between the motor and the power supply, it overheats and smoke comes out of the pot.

To do it with a potentiometer will probably need a large wirewound pot of the same wattage as your motor. these are expensive, waste power and get hot. The simple method would be to make a variable voltage power supply, with a max output of 18 volts. Have a look at the LM317 voltage regulator chip. It’s easy to use with plenty of application notes a ready made circuits available on the Internet. Note that there is a voltage drop (loss) across the regulator of about 1.25 volts, so your source will need to be at least1.25 volts greater than the voltage the motor needs to get full speed although if you don’t need full speed, it may not be an issue. You can engineer the voltage control pot with a series fixed resistor to avoid accidentally going of the max motor voltage.

An 18 volt 10 amp motor at 1/2 current and voltage you are going to need a 100 watt+ wire wound potentiometer and that is not regular these days..

Use a PWM speed controller that pulses the power on and off at a varable rate.

Can I run an 18-volt DC circular saw with a 24-volt power source (2 EA, 12-volt lead-acid batteries in a series)?

That’s a 33% higher voltage. With that comes higher current draw, which I’m sure those batteries can deliver.

The real question would be how well will the motor handle the extra torque and heat produced. Normally, when a motor starts to bog down, the user will respond by backing off the demand. On the other hand, when a motor is delivering more torque than was specified in the design, it’s easy to try to use that extra torque to produce extra work. Here are some questions one would do well to ask:

Can the bearings deal with the added torque demands, and if so, for how long?
Given that many hand tools today have plastic components, will the added torque exceed the structural limits of these load-bearing parts?
How well is the motor able to remove the extra heat that, inevitably, will be produced? Will such heat weaken the insulation of the field or armature windings? The field windings are more vulnerable, as they are stationary and typically receive little airflow, compared to the armature. Will the plastic parts, if any, be vulnerable to the added heat?
If one chooses to run 18v equipment on a 24v supply, added safety precautions are essential, as well as a keen eye on any abnormal behavior.

18V DC Motor For Sale

A cheap DC induction motor can be found for sale from many different manufacturers, but two of the most reliable and trusted brands are those made in China and the United States. Both countries have a long history of manufacturing quality products, and their motors are no different. While there may be some differences in design or materials used, both types of motors offer great value for the price.

When choosing a DC induction motor, it is important to consider what it will be used for. If it will be primarily used for mechanical purposes, then a Chinese-made motor may be the better option. These motors tend to be more rugged and durable, able to withstand heavy use without breaking down. However, if the motor will be used mostly for electrical purposes, then an American-made motor may be a better choice. These motors tend to be more efficient and have fewer issues with overheating.

🌀 Nikola Tesla's Ether Technology:
💠 Harnessing the power of back electromagnetic fields (Back EMF)
💠 Back EMF generates Lenz's Force in generator 💠 When the output energy is not affected by the Lenz (free) force, a self-powered mechanism will be established from the AC generator head to the induction motor. And the kinetic energy of the induction motor at that time was only supposed to stir the Ether by Nikola Tesla's "Rotating Magnetic Field". That's the mechanism for a Free Energy AC generator - no fuel needed - Self-powered generator.
