With brush DC motors, the direction of current will be reversed across the rotor's conductor frame.

During operation, reversing the motor's direction causes a return electromagnetic field, also known as Back EMF, which can damage the conductor sheath, with the insulated wire sheath. Basically, add a capacitor to charge this harmful Back EMF, then discharge it to become beneficial.

To reverse high power motors, it is recommended to change the polarity at the anchor. A break in the winding field on a running motor can cause problems, because the resulting EMF has an increased voltage, which can damage the winding insulation. This will lead to the failure of the electric motor.

To realize the reverse direction of the rotor, a bridge circuit is used on a relay, contactor or transistor.

If you don't care about Back EMF, with low power motors, reversing the motor is quite simple gainr with built-in electronics a field effect transistor (FET). See picture below.
